Courses for you
PD BRIEFS The APA runs a significant number of professional development courses throughout the year, both face-to-face and online. Here are some highlights among the upcoming courses.
Positive approach to dementia care
This course will provide an introduction to Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care, a support methodology to improve connection and engagement for people living with dementia.
You will explore how we can minimise stress and improve connections and engagement for people living with dementia, including practical methods that can be shared with carers.
Participants will learn how to engage someone with late-stage dementia, understand sensory changes as dementia progresses and adapt their approach to complex situations and to people at varying stages of the disease.

Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders
Physiotherapists working in aged care, community settings and acute care hospitals frequently manage people with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
This course enhances assessment and treatment of these disorders by incorporating recent research findings, new medication protocols, evolving management practices and their implications for physiotherapy practice.
Participants will also develop an understanding of the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s disease and common Parkinsonisms, learn how medication influences symptoms management and further develop a treatment toolkit to assist patients effectively.
This course is only available to qualified and Ahpra-registered physiotherapists.

Participants will learn evidence-based intervention approaches and simple strategies for patient self-management to improve function of the older knee, minimise painful recurrences and avoid surgery where possible.
This course offers both theory and practical components, exploring recent studies to provide greater insight into treating the ageing knee.
Participants will also gain pain management strategies for post-knee arthroplasties to assist with rehabilitation. This course is only available to qualified and Ahpra-registered physiotherapists.
