The APA runs a significant number of professional development courses throughout the year, both face-to-face and online. Here are some highlights among the upcoming courses.

VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION

This course aims to provide an overview of vestibular anatomy and introduce clinicians to the assessment and treatment of individuals with vestibular dysfunction.

Participants will develop a foundational understanding of peripheral and central vestibular anatomy and will learn to assess an individual with vestibular dysfunction to determine their suitability for vestibular rehabilitation, along with designing customised vestibular retraining programs tailored to the specific needs of the patient.

This course is only available to qualified, Ahpra-registered physiotherapists.

‘Introduction to vestibular rehabilitation in adults of all ages’ will run on 14–15 March in Camberwell, Victoria, on 18–19 April in Kent Town, South Australia and on 30–31 May in North Ryde, New South Wales

LUMBO-PELVIC AND HIP FUNCTION

Participants in this course will study comprehensive muscular assessment and exercise rehab programs for the lumbo-pelvic region and a wide variety of age-related hip conditions.

Participants will be exposed to numerous functional exercises and explore the theory and research behind assessment and progression strategies for lumbo-pelvic functional programs as well as rehab strategies for older hip patients.

Topics include assessing dysfunctional local and global muscle recruitment patterns of the lumbar spine, pelvis and hips; incorporating grading systems to appraise and progress lumbo-pelvic functional programs from the acute stage through to normal function; and designing dysfunction-specific exercise programs to optimise function in the older hip.

This course is only available to qualified, Ahpra-registered physiotherapists. Prereading materials distributed at registration cut-off date.

‘Optimising dynamic function of the lumbo pelvic and the older hip’ will run on 28 February – 1 March in Eight Mile Plains, Queensland, on 13–14 June in Bentley, Western Australia and on 12–13 July in North Ryde, New South Wales

ASSESSING MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

The two-day Neuro-Sensory Motor Developmental Assessment (NSMDA) practical course includes lectures on the theoretical foundations of the NSMDA and demonstrations of its application with infants and children.

On finishing the course, participants will understand the background and development of the NSMDA for infants and young children and be able to interpret the scoring and grading systems of the NSMDA and apply the assessment findings in clinical settings to advise, refer and plan interventions.

This course is only available to qualified, Ahpra-registered physiotherapists. A background knowledge of early childhood development is advisable.

‘Neuro Sensory Motor Developmental Assessment’ will run on 7–8 February in Camberwell, Victoria.
