Elevating education
Physiotherapy is one of the most clinically diverse professions in healthcare.
The APA’s national groups span the breadth of practice—working across public, private and community settings to deliver care throughout the life span.
Developing education that reflects this breadth of practice is no small task.
That’s why we’re proud to see education established as a dedicated pillar within the APA’s strategic plan, Towards 2030.
Continuous professional development is fundamental to career growth, job satisfaction and workforce retention and our goal is to support physiotherapists to build their expertise through structured, recognised pathways that offer clear opportunities for progression.
The education pillar focuses on aligning titling and specialisation with professional growth, strengthening career trajectories, fostering collaboration and empowering learners.
It marks a fundamental shift towards a more integrated and strategic approach to professional development and credentialing, one that connects every part of a physiotherapist’s career.
We’re also listening carefully to member feedback.
Members practising in rural, regional and remote areas have highlighted their limited access to professional development opportunities, particularly face-to-face education. In response, we’re investing in new infrastructure to enable live, interactive hybrid learning experiences—without the barriers of distance or travel.
The first sites in Western Australia and Victoria will be operational by the end of the year.
We’re also transforming our online learning environment. Long, lecture-style content is being replaced with interactive experiences that engage learners more deeply and fit around professional life.
The first redesigned programs— Musculoskeletal and Sports and Exercise—will launch in mid- 2026, with 56 new modules forming part of the modernised suite of courses.
A key milestone this year has been the development of a clear identity statement for the Australian College of Physiotherapists.
This statement affirms the College’s role as the home of advanced expertise and lifelong professional growth within physiotherapy.
We are now undertaking a comprehensive, multi-year review of the specialist training program to ensure that it remains contemporary, sustainable and accessible for future generations.
Meanwhile, the scope of specialisation continues to expand, reflecting the many ways physiotherapists contribute to advancing the profession.
At APASC25, we proudly celebrated the first graduates of the Specialist Research Physiotherapist pathway— a milestone that signals a broader, more inclusive vision for recognising excellence across clinical and research domains.
A key step in modernising our educational offerings is a comprehensive review of assessment across the entire career pathway.
In partnership with the Australian Council for Educational Research, we are reviewing current assessment practices and developing a centralised assessment strategy to support consistency, transparency and credibility.
This work will strengthen the integrity of APA and College programs and credentials and create a clearer experience for learners.
Collaboration with universities and other educational providers will play a larger role as we strengthen physiotherapy’s professional learning ecosystem.
Our vision is to empower physiotherapists to take ownership of their own professional development through clearly defined pathways that span all areas of practice.
Guided by Physiotherapy.
Shaping our future together: next generation white paper, we’re particularly focused on supporting early-career physiotherapists to ensure a smoother transition from study to practice.
Education sits at the heart of professional excellence and career satisfaction.
Through ongoing investment, thoughtful reform and collaboration across the profession, we are building an education system that supports physiotherapists at every stage of their career and in every corner of the country.
I invite you to be part of this journey—engage with the changes ahead, share your insights and make the most of the growing opportunities to learn, connect and lead.
