Fulfilling our potential

As we look ahead to the next five years, the APA is committed to establishing physiotherapy as an indispensable part of Australia’s healthcare system—in the eyes of the public and policymakers alike.

Our new strategic plan identifies key priorities that will guide our work as the peak body representing 45,000 physiotherapists across Australia.

We are dedicated to advancing our advocacy, educational offerings and connections throughout the physiotherapy community.

The first step lies in recognising that we operate in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

We anticipate that the next generation of physiotherapists will bring different expectations.

We expect artificial intelligence to become increasingly integrated and for educational delivery to be transformed.

Our education strategy is to deliver a learning experience that guides, grows and distinguishes the physiotherapy profession.

This will be accomplished by offering flexible, evidence-informed education while redesigning our education programs to be contemporary, learner-driven and tailored to physiotherapy’s diverse career pathways.

We aim to strengthen our career pathways with a clear, connected journey from graduation to retirement.

This means further investment in curriculum and content development and increased support for our educators and volunteers.

By enhancing resources, training, access and recognition for members, we will maintain high standards and celebrate those who help shape our profession.

We will partner with other organisations to increase the scale of our impact while working with universities and experts to prepare for the future.

Looking to advocacy and national healthcare reform, our role is to demonstrate physiotherapy’s potential to lead across
all levels of the healthcare system.

Our profession provides solutions to many of today’s most pressing healthcare challenges and that needs to be made clear.

It is also crucial that we work to expand access to physiotherapy, regardless of a patient’s financial situation or where they live.

Our goal is to ensure that decision-makers at both federal and state level fully recognise this potential and integrate it into policy development.

For insurers and public funders, we will prove the value of physiotherapy through data, policy and strategic pricing models.

With targeted marketing, partnerships and a stronger public voice, we will show that physiotherapy is indispensable in healthcare delivery.

Our national reform agenda will proactively engage in reforms across primary care, public health, aged care, disability care and veterans’ health—with an expanded focus on priority populations.

Our advocacy efforts reflect the scope of our contributions as a profession.

We want to emphasise that being a member shouldn’t feel like a transactional relationship.

Membership is about community, connection and professional identity and our upcoming initiative PhysioHub aims to provide a platform for collaboration, support and connection.

We want to pay particular attention to the next generation of physiotherapists, who are navigating the transition between student and new graduate.

We know that smoothing this pathway for new graduates is essential to building lifelong professional relationships and ensuring both career satisfaction and retention.

Central to our success are the volunteers who are a key part of the APA’s work.

We can’t exist without them and we need to improve our recognition of their vital role in advancing our profession.

Underpinning all of our initiatives is a commitment to ensuring that the APA is always seen as an organisation that our members and the public can trust and have confidence in.

As we move through the new strategic plan, we will regularly review and evaluate our progress against our goals.

Together, we aim to position physiotherapy as a vital part of Australia’s healthcare future while creating a stronger, more connected community.
