The Complete and Advanced Upper Quadrant


This course encompasses the differential diagnosis, assessment and management of the cervical spine and shoulder. It aims to integrate research evidence with best clinical practice and is designed to improve participants' ability to differentially diagnose contributing mechanisms and impairments in patients presenting with pain in the upper quadrant, with consideration of cervical, neural and shoulder structures. A broader range of clinical examination techniques and advanced clinical reasoning and management options will be covered.

Learning outcomes

  • Improve knowledge of differentiation of common upper quadrant disorders including cervical, neurological and common shoulder conditions.
  • Improve knowledge and skills in the differentiation of radiculopathy from peripheral nerve conditions
  • Improve knowledge and understanding of a good routine examination of the shoulder including active, passive and structured focused palpation.
  • Improve knowledge and skills in the assessment of neuropathic pain and mechano-sensitivity.
  • Improve knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of people with upper quadrant disorders presenting with sensory hyper sensitivity.
  • Improve knowledge and skills in the assessment of the axio- scapula and cervical flexor and extensor muscle systems for upper quadrant disorders.
  • Improve knowledge and skills in the assessment of shoulder muscle function, scapula and rotator cuff.
  • Improve clinical reasoning and ability to construct an appropriate management plan for a complex neurological condition.
  • Improve knowledge in the assessment and management of low risk and more complex/ high risk patients.
  • Improve clinical reasoning skills in the assessment, classification and applying a targeted management approach to someone with an upper quadrant disorder.
  • Improve the understanding of prioritizing, managing and gaining compliance of dynamic control of the shoulder complex.
  • Improve skills and competence in the basic assessment of the cervical spine with emphasis on pain for cervical articular structures.

Prerequisites

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.
  • Minimum of 5 years physiotherapy practicing experience

Presenters

Trudy Rebbeck


Prof Trudy Rebbeck PhD FACP. Trudy is Professor of Clinical Translation in Physiotherapy at Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney, Australia and a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. She leads two national programmes of research; i) Implementation of clinical pathways and models of care for whiplash and musculoskeletal (MSK) pain conditions more broadly and, ii) Discovery of new mechanism underpinning headache and MSK pain conditions . In the past 5 years, her programme of research has attracted >$15m in competitive grants. She has 100 publications and >3300 citations. Prof Rebbeck has supervised 18 HDR students and mentored over 50 clinical specialists in physiotherapy to obtain Fellowship. She is a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist in primary care specialising in assessment and management of complex cervical spine and head disorders (e.g whiplash, headache, concussion). Trudy's international impact in clinical translation is demonstrated by the 10+ international workshops she delivers in this area per annum.

Mary Magarey


Mary is a Musculoskeletal and Sports and Exercise Specialist Physiotherapist. She holds honorary titles of Fellowship of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation & Life Membership of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia and was awarded Honoured Membership of the APA at the 2019 National Conference. She retired from the University of South Australia in 2014, where she taught for 40 years in the Master of Musculoskeletal & Sports Physiotherapy & its precursor programs & is still involved in the Master of Clinical Physiotherapy. Mary was responsible for development of the sports programs. Her principal area of clinical expertise includes physiotherapy diagnosis and management of disorders affecting the shoulder complex. While primarily a clinician, Mary's research background and educational experience provides her with a strongly evidence informed approach to clinical practice. Mary currently practises as a Consultant Specialist Physiotherapist in metropolitan Adelaide & regional South Australia and teaches nationally and internationally.

Robert Boland


Rob Boland is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapy. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Discipline of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, a Physiotherapy Specialist for NSW Health, and he consults clinically at the Sydney Spine Institute. He is also an Independent Physiotherapy Consultant for the State Insurance Regulatory Authority in NSW. He has published widely in physiotherapy, neurophysiology and neurology journals. His research interests are in the areas of nerve function, rehabilitation of shoulder injuries, spinal pain, and culturally and linguistically diverse populations. He was a co-developer of the APA Spinal Physiotherapy Part A (Cervical Spine) Course and has acted as a training facilitator and examiner for the Australian College of Physiotherapists.
