Workforce Realities Shaping Physiotherapy Practices in 2026

This presentation outlines the workforce realities reshaping physiotherapy practices in 2026, combining global insights with Australian-specific pressures to highlight what leaders need to know now. It begins by framing the global challenge: rising healthcare demand driven by ageing populations and chronic disease is outpacing talent supply, with widespread skills shortages. The lens then narrows to Australia, where allied health practices face intense competition for a broad range of clinical and non-clinical roles. Emerging trends show a paradox, while AI is transforming healthcare, it remains underutilised in hiring, and human-centric skills are increasingly critical. At the same time, cost pressures and cautious hiring make strategic workforce planning essential. The presentation concludes by shifting from challenge to opportunity, outlining practical levers clinics can pull to expand talent pools, strengthen retention, optimise workforce mix and take immediate action, supported by the APA and ManpowerGroup partnership to help practices build sustainable workforce solutions.
