An Introduction to Supported Lying

This presentation will cover the principles of supported lying, focussing on the chest and hips and how consistent positioning can protect body shape, improve comfort and prevent long-term complications. Participants will gain an understanding of the key concepts of supported lying, supported by the exploration of case studies using both specialised and readily available supports.

Denise is a Paediatric Physiotherapist who has worked in the field of paediatrics, disability and early childhood intervention (ECI) for 30+ years.Special interests include postural care (therapeutic supported lying) and best practice in ECI, particularly coaching, routines-based model ofECI and the importance of family relationships and interactions. These areas interface to ensure to focus on family and child outcomes.Currently co-Director of Postural Care Australia, Chair of PRECI (Professionals and Researchers in ECI) and working as a Consultant in theECI area.Currently completing Doctorate through UWS. Co-authored a chapter in ‘Early Childhood Intervention – Working with families of youngchildren with special needs' (2017) Editors: Carl Dunst and Hanan Sukkar. Completed Masters in Paediatrics through University of Queensland, with Dr Yvonne Burns (author and developer of the NSMDA).Has presented nationally and internationally on Postural Care, Best Practice and the NSMDA and worked with professionals and carers (trained anduntrained) to implement postural care (therapeutic supported lying) for children with physical disabilities as well as best practice early childhoodintervention in St Petersburg Russia and Ukraine. Represented Australia in the ECI field at a United Nations meeting in Bangkok.
