Say It Better: An Introduction to the Skills Every Mentor Needs

In this workshop, Annette Tonkin will guide allied health clinicians through the foundational shift that separates effective mentors from experienced clinicians who happen to be mentoring. Drawing on more than 30 years of clinical practice, education, and mentoring development, Annette moves the focus away from expert-mode problem-solving and toward the preparation, mindset, and conversation skills that build genuine capability in others.

Participants will explore three practical tools they can use immediately:

The Outcome Compass — how to define a clear intention for yourself, your mentee, and the relationship before a mentoring conversation begins
The Hat Shift — how to signal the move from clinical expert to developmental mentor, and why contracting the conversation changes everything that follows
The Reflective Loop — a four-step sequence for responding to what a mentee shares without defaulting to advice, fixing, or correction

Face to face event:

This is a face to face event only and will not be recorded or live streamed.

Annette Tonkin

SA physiotherapist and now communication trainer and coach, and I help allied health professionals become the kind of mentors people remember for all the right reasons. Over the years, I have delivered workshops and trainings that are practical, engaging, and rooted in real-world experience—because I know the challenges of leading and supporting others when time is short and the pressure is high. My focus is on helping clinicians communicate with more clarity, confidence and care—so they can bring out the best in their teams and clients, without burning themselves out in the process. Outside of work, you will usually find me thinking whilst swimming, hiking, or with my nose in a good book—I'm a big believer in staying curious, moving often, and living in a way that leaves space for both growth and joy.
