Physiotherapy in paediatric respiratory conditions – the art and the science

This course will assist in understanding of the spectrum of respiratory illnesses in childhood and their impact on future health outcomes has advanced in the past decade. Previously accepted definitions of diagnoses and the associated physiotherapy clinical reasoning has been challenged as more sensitive diagnostic tools have become available.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the spectrum of respiratory illnesses in children and common conditions requiring physiotherapy.
  • Revise the respiratory anatomy and physiology of infant, child and adult and understand the implications for individualised physiotherapy programs in context of common pathophysiology and diagnosIs.
  • Utilise a comprehensive respiratory assessment approach to develop a defensible rationale for the physiotherapy management plan.
  • Review airway clearance techniques and their application in various clinical scenarios, particularly when combined approaches and adaptations are indicated.
  • Understand assessment and prescription of exercise in paediatric patients with respiratory impairment.
  • Provide strategies to support adherence in chronic respiratory disease and complex presentations.
  • Understand the impact of psychosocial development and adaptations of therapy to child and family.
  • Understand indictors, precautions, and contraindications for various respiratory physiotherapy interventions.
  • Understand where respiratory management of children fits within standards of care.
  • Have an awareness of current research directions and topical issues.

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.

Christine Wilson


Christine Wilson, FACP is a Specialist Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists, 2010). Christine Wilson works as Consultant Physiotherapist for non-acute physiotherapy services at Queensland Children's Hospital, and previously at RCH Brisbane. Honorary adjunct appointments include Assistant Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University, Gold Coast Qld; and Adjunct Senior Lecturer, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Griffith University, Gold Coast Qld. Chris has been an active member of the APA since 1976 and participates in cardiorespiratory and paediatric national groups. Chris has worked extensively with clinical, research, and educational roles particularly in paediatric cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and airway malacia. Pioneering physiotherapy services in the Indigenous Respiratory Outreach Care (IROC) program, Chris has provided clinical services, teaching and resources throughout remote and regional Queensland.
