Paediatric Physiotherapy Level 1

The Paediatric Level 1 course is a highly interactive and practical course designed for physiotherapists who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in managing children's conditions. The course is recommended for new graduate physiotherapists with less than 3 years' experience, or adult physiotherapists who would like to gain more education in paediatrics. The case study format will allow participants to accelerate their learning of key concepts for application in the workplace. This course is a mandatory component of the experiential titling pathway in Paediatric Physiotherapy.


Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate basic clinical reasoning to plan the management of children with common complaints
  • Select and demonstrate the use of assessment and classification systems tools appropriate to infancy and childhood
  • Apply motor development theories (including development of body systems) to the management of children (0–16 years of age) presenting with motor disorders

Prerequisites

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.

Carolyn O'Mahoney


Carolyn O'Mahoney APAM is an APA Titled Paediatric Physiotherapist. She completed her undergraduate degree in physiotherapy in 1998, graduating with Honours and awarded the student prize for the stream of neurology. She became a titled Paediatric Physiotherapist in January 2017. Over her career she has worked in hospital, community, not-for-profit and private practice settings. She founded Therapy 4 Kids nine years ago in the ACT. Therapy 4 Kids is now a multidisciplinary paediatric private practice and continues to be a registered NDIS provider. Carolyn is passionate about access for all children to quality multidisciplinary care and works towards this by implementing high quality assessment and timely appropriate referrals as needed. Carolyn is an accredited advanced assessor of Prechtl's General Movement Assessment and has implemented this assessment into routine assessments for age-appropriate clients. She has been a committee member of AusACPDM Scientific Education Committee since 2016 and is the current Chair of the APA – ACT Paediatric Group Chapter. Carolyn also Chairs the Early Childhood Early Intervention ACT NDIS Provider's Group.

Genevieve McInnes


Genevieve is a physiotherapist with over 20 years experience working in paediatrics.Genevieve has worked in a variety of settings including the Children's Hospital Westmead, private practice and with transdisciplinary early childhood early intervention teams. Genevieve has experience working with children from premature infants to teenagers and with a range of conditions.Genevieve enjoys working closely with children and their families/caregivers to provide the best opportunities for children to achieve their goals.

Olivia is a Senior Physiotherapist in Paediatrics and Neonatology at Centenary Hospital for Women and Children (Canberra Health Services). She completed her Masters in Advanced Paediatric Physiotherapy Practice in 2020 (Monash University). Prior to this she completed her Masters of Physiotherapy (University of Canberra mid-2013) after completing Bachelor of Medical Science (Australian National University) and Graduate Certificate in Human Movement Sciences (UC). Started at Canberra Hospital as a rotating physiotherapist and became a Senior physiotherapist in Paediatrics. Further training includes Prechtl's Qualitative Assessment of General Movements, Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination, Neurosensory Motor Development Assessment, Lacey Assessment of Preterm Infants and BASIC Paediatric ICU training. Olivia is interested in a range of acute and chronic paediatric and neonatology physiotherapy.
