Introduction To Dry Needling for Sports and Spinal Injuries

Physiotherapists are increasingly using dry needling for pain management. This structured course meets the national recommendations for physiotherapists to practice dry needling safely for musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries. The sound knowledge of indications and contraindications for dry needling requires appropriate assessment and treatment skills.

This course is designed to provide physiotherapists an opportunity to improve knowledge and skills of dry needling, and make them aware of guidelines for safe dry needling practices.


Learning outcomes

  • Understand the theories and research on dry needling pertaining to musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries
  • Be aware of the contraindications and precautions for dry needling
  • Understand infection control guidelines and effectively practice infection control in relation to dry needling
  • Be able to evaluate patients suitable for dry needling
  • Be able to complete a technique checklist for safe dry needling in a range of musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries
  • Reach a level of safe dry needling of upper trapezius, thoracic spine and quadratus lumborum – three of the most dangerous areas physiotherapists are likely to needle

Jane Rooney


Jane Rooney, FACP is a Specialist Sports Physiotherapist – sub specialty knee (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2009) and Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (1997). Jane has extensive experience in the Sports Medicine field, both in Europe and Australia and is the Clinical Director of Prahran Sports Medicine Centre and Prahran Market Injury Rehab. She has a particular interest in ACL injury rehabilitation and prevention programs, patella instability, patellofemoral pain, in addition to knee osteoarthritis management programs. Jane was awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship in 2016 to investigate management algorithms and contemporary conservative management programs for anterior cruciate ligament injury, travelling to Europe, Scandinavia and America. Jane works closely with many of Melbourne's leading knee surgeons and sports physicians. Jane enjoys the challenge of working with athletes of all abilities including recreational , school, state, national and international competitors. Jane has a passion for education and is the sole director of Physio Educators which provides courses and online masterclasses in conjunction with the Australian Physiotherapy Association, in addition to a post at Melbourne University as an Honorary Lecturer, Guest Lecturer and post graduate mentor at La Trobe University and Swinburne University, an examiner and facilitator for the Australian College of Physiotherapists and a regular presenter for many APA courses.

Peter Selvaratnam


Dr Peter Selvaratnam is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, an Associate Clinical Professor at The University of Melbourne and a Visiting Lecturer at La Trobe University. Peter is the Principal at the Melbourne Spinal and Sports Medicine Clinic, the Headache Centre of Victoria, the Laser Pain Clinic Australia and runs educational programmes for Backtolife. Peter initially studied acupuncture in Sri Lanka. He subsequently commenced the Level 1 Dry Needling programme for the APA in 2004 and now teaches dry needling for the APA Level 1 courses and previously for The University of Melbourne Masters and Clinical doctoral programme. Peter was the inaugural Chairperson for the Victorian ADNG in 2007 and was the national ADNG representative for Victoria. Peter was an invited speaker for the APA winter breakfast on the application of dry needling in patients with chronic low back pain, sciatic nerve conditions and sympathetic nervous system mediated pain. Peter has a PhD in Medicine in Functional Anatomy of the cervical spine and the upper limb neurodynamic tests in patients with sports injuries, musculoskeletal conditions and in post-mortem cadavers.
