Time to change how we assess and manage shoulder pain

Shoulder pain is a common musculoskeletal complaint across the life time that presents in clinical practice. Come and listen to Dr Alison Thorpe as she presents from her recent PhD research into rotator cuff.

Traditionally, management of shoulder pain has followed a structural model where assessment, diagnosis and treatment has been based on clinical tests with low specificity and the search for patho-anatomical changes on imaging. Contemporary healthcare pathways support a biopsychosocial approach for understanding and managing musculoskeletal pain, an approach that has not yet consistently been translated into clinical practice for shoulder pain. This lecture will present findings from Dr Alison Thorpe's recent PhD research into rotator cuff disorders and discuss the important role that physiotherapists play in delivering high-value care for shoulder pain under the biopsychosocial model.
