Frailty: Time for physiotherapists to “walk the walk”. Translating evidence to practice

Session objectives:

1. Define the concept of frailty according to current literature

2. Recognise the implications of frailty

3. Apply knowledge of frailty tools to measure frailty in your patients/clients across the continuum

4. Apply knowledge of best practice frailty interventions to reverse or hinder progression of frailty for patients/clients care in your area of practice.

Melanie Haley


Melanie Haley is the Grade 4 Aged and Complex Care physiotherapist at Eastern Health, overseeing the general medicine and GEM physiotherapists across all sites. She also does assessing for the Australian Physiotherapy Council and GEM weekend physiotherapy for Melbourne Health. Melanie graduated La Trobe University with Honours in 2001. She completed her Masters of Gerontology at La Trobe University in 2011, including a minor thesis on whether a frailty measure could predict outcomes for patients on sub-acute aged care wards that was subsequently published in Australian Health Review. She has research interests in delirium (recently published systematic review on physical activity and delirium in hospital in the Australasian Journal on Ageing), frailty and hospital-related functional decline. Clinically Melanie has worked at Eastern Health, Alfred Health and Melbourne Health, including a secondment to the National Ageing Research Institute, in areas of GEM, general medicine, vestibular rehabilitation, falls and balance, community based rehabilitation and post acute care. Melanie is currently a member of the governance committee of the Victorian Care of Older People Network of Safer Care Victoria.
