Using virtual reality to treat phantom limb pain

This lecture will review the recent introduction of augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in the treatment of phantom limb pain in upper and lower limb amputees.

It will include a review of the biological aetiology of phantom limb pain and demonstration of this technology.

Chris Weiers (MScMed (PainMgt), B Physio (Hons), Dip Leadership & Mgmt, MAPA) is a titled Pain Physiotherapist and the deputy manager of physiotherapy at Epworth Rehabilitation Richmond. He is a guest lecturer at La Trobe University in Melbourne and self-professed technology geek with over 10 years' experience in treating persistent pain in Canada, the UK and Australia. Chris has a particular interest in the influence of behavioural therapy in the management of persistent pain, complex regional pain syndrome and amputee pain. In 2017, Chris was co-awarded the Baxter Health Scholarship to investigate the utilisation of virtual and augmented reality technology in the reduction of phantom limb pain.
