Behavioural Optometry: Vision Therapy after Brain Injury

Vision is more than reading letters on a chart, it involves where things are, what they are and what they mean. Before we can interpret what we see, we must point and focus our eyes in space - we must be cameramen before we can be a viewer.

In Acquired Brain Injury, a wide range of cortical and subcortical injuries occur to the visual system. Treating the cameraman rather than the cameras allows an ABI client to spend less attentional energy on maintaining their environment, allowing more attention for experiencing and interpreting their world. Optimisation of vision is therefore a critical aspect of rehabilitation for many acquired brain injuries including TBI, stroke and concussion.
