A practical approach to shoulder dislocations

This session will cover an algorithmic approach to assessing and managing shoulder dislocations. Learn a number of different techniques in order to optimise your plan for every patient.

Neil Cunningham


Dr. Neil Cunningham is an Emergency Physician at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. He has a special interest in shoulder dislocations, having published a novel reduction method known as the Cunningham Technique, and has presented nationally and internationally on this topic. Over the past decade he has also developed or perfected reduction techniques for the shoulder, “zero position” for antero-inferior, posterior, and luxatio erectae, as well as a number of other joints. Neil's other areas of interest include research into stress and performance in critical care trainees, and the biomechanics of running.He is the clinical lead for St Vincent's Australia Ethos Program, a cultural change project designed to improve patient and staff safety through behavioural change. Having spent a decade in the field of simulation-based education, he has expertise in difficult conversations within debriefing, and communication skills in crisis situations. He is a passionate advocate for junior doctor welfare and training and was awarded the Victorian Clinical Educator of the Year in 2017, and has just taken on the role of Clinical Director, Medical Workforce.
