Disordered breathing-a multi-disciplinary approach
A – Z of Disordered Breathing A refreshing review of Disordered Breathing from a Multidisciplinary Perspective: From Anatomy to Pathophysiology and Biomechanics, linking into Assessment, Treatment and Ongoing Management from a Multi-Disciplinary Team Perspective. Case studies will showcase MDT management approach in action.
Disordered breathing is the keystone of most respiratory + cardiac conditions, often historically being the poor relative and under treated. New modalities of treatment have raised its profile and new evidence has also linked it as a topic of interest to clinicians practicing in other musculoskeletal, neurological, womens health areas when research has increasingly shown it to be a prevalent factor requiring assessment and treatment to optimise patients physical well being.
This lecture is available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists and may be also available to other AHPRA registered practitioners.
Students welcome.

Assisted development of the Breathe Easier Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) community education program and providing education to COPD population on the Gold Coast since 1995. An initiative of this program was the establishment of the Lungs and Respiratory Friends (LARF) support group. In November 2007 was instrumental in the development of the 8 week exercise component for COPD clients, providing a comprehensive Pulmonary Rehabilitation program in the Community Health Centres on the Gold Coast.
Interest in disordered breathing developed from working with COPD population and improving function with strategies implemented to maximise breathing pattern and control during activities.
- Member Working Party for the Australian Lung Foundation Lungs in Action project including developing Training package and involved in evaluating pilot sites.
- Member working party for Australian Lung Foundation for training package for Pulmonary Rehab providers

A major concern was observing clients performing controlled breathing well in the supervised environment of Pulmonary Rehabilitation but struggling to implement strategies into the home environment. To attempt to improve this transference was instrumental in developing an ADL component as part of the exercise program. This component is in the process of being evaluated regarding its effectiveness and just having gained ethics approval is due to commence.

Ashleigh Farr
Ashleigh is a senior speech pathologist at the Chronic Disease and Post-Acute Programs across both Helensvale Community Health Centre and Robina Health Precinct. Originally from New Zealand, she trained at the University of Canterbury before working as a new graduate across the entire spectrum of care at the Canterbury District Health Board. Following this, she worked in acute and sub-acute care in the UK before moving to the Gold Coast almost 4 years ago and into community health. After almost 9 years working as a speech pathologist, she has developed a real interest in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of swallowing and communication conditions in respiratory and neurology conditions. She feels that working in the community provides the opportunity to really understand the client's she is working with, and often provides many challenges and opportunities for multidisciplinary team work and problem-solving.
