The “Good” physio paradox. Are the skills that we value the skills we need for the future.

Anatomy, pathophysiology, manual therapy and the latest research are all areas that we focus a large amount of our learning and teaching time in Physiotherapy. Those same areas are very much a focus of future CPD hours as well. But are they the skills that we actually need to flourish as a Physiotherapist? or is there another skill that we need to better future proof our profession and also our continuing growth as an expert clinician. Assistant Professor and titled Sports and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist Nick Marshall, discusses the often neglected and all too quiet skill of communication that sometimes eludes the studying or new graduate physio, a skill or lack thereof, that can also contribute to the ever increasing and concerning dropout rate of young physiotherapists at 5 years. Having recently been awarded the 2020 Australian of the Year- Local Hero for Queensland, Nick discusses the implications and importance of communication as a physiotherapist and the importance of that skill in developing a strong connection to patients and the local community. Not to mention the importance of this skill as the profession enters a world of artificial intelligence and the need to future proof what we do.
