Synthetic Casting Course

This practical course will describe the materials that are available, their differences and how to apply them. It will cover casts to the upper and lower limbs, including short arm, scaphoid and short leg synthetic casts.

Learning outcomes

  • Participants will learn about the different synthetic materials available and their uses as well as the basic principles of casting
  • Participants will be able to apply synthetic casts to the upper and lower limbs
  • Participants will understand the care and maintenance of the casts
  • Participants will discuss what decisions in fracture management should be made by the medical staff and by the physiotherapist
  • Participants will understand what joints should be included in the casts and what joint positions should be used
  • Be able to appraise their own casts and to troubleshoot for problems with casts
  • Participants will gain instruction and practice in cast removal
  • Participants will experience what it is like to have a cast applied and what it feels like to wear a cast in the short term
  • To be made aware of Casting and removal Guidelines

Prerequisites

  • This course is available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists and may be also available to other AHPRA registered practitioners.

Presenters

Patricia Evans


Trish Evans graduated as a physiotherapist in 1976 and has predominately worked in the large teaching hospital environment during that time as well as working regionally in NSW and the United Kingdom. She is a Level 6 Specialist Physiotherapist at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in charge of the Plaster Room and ED physiotherapy services. Trish has been Chairman of the NSW APA Orthopaedic Committee for over 20 years and is involved with teaching casting and orthopaedics across physiotherapy as well various other professions at the under graduate and post graduate levels. Her clinical load is predominately acute orthopaedics as well as elective surgery and this includes orthopaedics within the specialist areas of spinal injuries, hand and microsurgery, burns and paediatrics.
