Risk management of musculoskeletal disorders

This course is offered as a professional development opportunity for physiotherapists in occupational health.
In this one-day highly interactive course, participants will gain an understanding of risk management principles and risk control measures, hazardous manual tasks assessment and analysis, and good work design.

Participants will also gain knowledge of commonly used risk assessment tools, and how to conduct a risk assessment. Participants will explore these topics through a mix of presentations, group discussions, case studies and scenarios.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe and understand the principles of risk management and undertake a basic risk assessment
  • Develop a working level of understanding of hazardous manual tasks assessment and analysis
  • Discuss some common misconceptions of manual handling and the evidence for or against
  • Describe the various risk assessment tools and when they could be used
  • Undertake a risk assessment and use two different tools
  • Understand the principles of good work design and how they can be used in the prevention of injury and optimising health
  • Discuss report writing

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists

Cassandra has over 30 years of experience in private practice, working with individuals and companies across the globe. Cassandra is the Physiotherapy Advisor at ReturnToWorkSA and through this role she provides education and support to allied health practitioners across South Australia to assist them to achieve the best outcomes for their work-injured clients. Cassandra also delivers education sessions for doctors and work injury claims managers.Cassandra lectures on the physiotherapy programs at UniSA, Flinders and Adelaide Universities in addition to presenting a variety of courses and lectures for the Australian Physiotherapy Association.Cassandra is the SA Chair of the APA Occupational Health Group and the Acupuncture and Dry Needling Group.
