Avoiding assumptions and bias - how to communicate respectfully with people who identify as LGBTQIA+

An interactive online session with a panel of experts who will provide practical advice and ideas on how to communicate respectfully with people who identify as LGBTQIA+ .

Dr Samantha Richter is a physiotherapist and osteopath, who has a special interest in pelvic health for all of the gender diverse population. She earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She received her Board Certification as a Women's Health Clinical Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Samantha has recently returned to Australia in 2018 and now practices clinically in a private practice in Brisbane.

Dr Megan Ross is a physiotherapist and post-doctoral researcher at RECOVER focusing on accessing and utilising health care, specifically in relation to digital health (including the rapid transition to telerehabilitation) and consumer perspectives. At 1 year post-PhD, Megan currently has 6 publications (5 first author) with a further 2 papers under review and 23 in progress. She has secured an external, competitive grant as CIA (Physiotherapy Research Foundation; $9900) and is leading an international team of researchers who are aiming to impact policy and practice in this area globally. She has delivered >10 international and national conference presentations and 5 invited presentations across professional/industry groups, one of which had >400 attendees.

Dr Jenny Setchell PhD (Psych) BSc (Pty) Grad Cert (Clin Pty) APAM is a Senior Research Fellow in physiotherapy at The University of Queensland, Australia. Her research interests include social and cultural perspectives on healthcare broadly, and physiotherapy specifically. In the last 5 years, Dr Setchell has produced over 55 publications and has presented more than 70 times on her work including prestigious international invited presentations. She has been awarded funding in Canada and Australia including her current NHRMC Fellowship. Within this timeframe, she has also received 10+ prizes and awards for her work. Dr Setchell also has 20 years of diverse clinical physiotherapy experience in Australia and internationally across multiple sub-disciplines and contexts. Dr Setchell is known for her qualitative and social justice work in physiotherapy and has led, and contributed to, numerous equity initiatives within the profession and beyond. She is director of SocioHealthLab, a research collective dedicated to these factors, and is co-founder of the Critical Physiotherapy Network, an international network across 30+ countries dedicated to rigorously understanding and, where needed, reworking the profession's assumptions, norms and practices. She co-edited the book ‘Manipulating Practices: A Critical Physiotherapy Reader'. Dr Setchell has also been an acrobat and a human rights worker.
