Human athletic performance optimisation is a complex process that demands the integration of multiple disciplines to address a broad range of capabilities necessary for success. This includes medical practitioners, physiotherapists, sports psychologists, biomechanists, S&C staff, dieticians, coaches and obviously the athlete themselves.

This symposium will explore many pertinent performance factors from a range of experts, furthering the understanding of the complexity of the role of the physiotherapist in this environment.

Snapshot of the presenters and topics:

All physiotherapists on the program with the post nominal ‘FACP' are Fellows of the Australian College of Physiotherapists and are Specialist Sports and Exercise Physiotherapists as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists.

Professor Craig Purdam, FACP, who was the Clinical manager of Physical Therapies at the Australian Institute of Sport for 35 years, will explore the elements and professional roles of the high-performance athlete support team.

Dr Adam Castricum who was the chief medical officer for the Australian track and field team at the London and Rio Olympics, in addition to his role at Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre and Hawthorn Football Club, will discuss the medical considerations for high performance athlete.

Dr Jill Leckey will explore “Riding the nutritional tightrope on the road to Gold” discussing evidence-based nutrition support to maximise training and competition requirements, to optimise performance. Jill is the performance nutritionist for the Australian Cycling Team.

Trish Wisbey Roth, FACP was the head physiotherapist for the Australian Women's cycling team for 10 years attending Olympic, World Championships and Commonwealth games. She will present “Rehab in the time of COVID- from hip fracture to cycling success.”

Matt Lancaster, FACP was a physiotherapist for The Australian Track and Field team over 3 Olympic cycles. He has extensive experience rehabilitating running, lower limb and general sporting injuries. Matt's case study will explore an elite pole-vaulting athlete case.

Alison Low, FACP will present an interesting case example, following the rehabilitation pathway of an elite runner with a complex calf tear. Alison Low has worked for Athletics Australia for many years and has been a team physiotherapist at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games and World Championships, Western Australian Institute of Sport and currently at the Victorian Institute of Sport.

Dr Jonah Oliver, Sports Psychologist, will present contemporary sports psychology paradigms and the disruptors and assistors of psychological flexibility in the elite athlete, to facilitate peak athletic performance. Dr Oliver is one of Australia's leading performance psychologists with over 20 years of experience working in high performance including Olympic teams, AFL, VFL, NRL, professional soccer teams, Tennis Australia, the Pro Golf tour, professional car racing teams, in addition to multinational corporations.

Panel discussion: An elite athlete presents with a potentially career ending condition. The panel will explore the professional roles of the multi-disciplinary support team for the athlete, which eventually led to their continued international level participation and success in their chosen sport.

Panellists are:

• Keren Faulkner, FACP
• Dr Andrea Mosler, FACP
• Dr Adam Castricum

Keren Faukner currently works for Cycling Australia's para-cycling program. Keren has supported Australian teams at 2 Olympic games, 3 Paralympic games and 3 Commonwealth games working with cycling, gymnastics and Paralympics programs.
