Physiotherapy management of people with parkinson's disease: an update

This is a practical one-day course aimed at physiotherapists who manage people with Parkinson's Disease. It will provide participants with an in depth understanding of the specific movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease, and their resulting impact on the individual's function and participation. Latest research related to medical management and physiotherapy management of gait and balance difficulties in people with Parkinson's disease will be covered. The workshop aims to help physiotherapists translate the latest knowledge to clinical application, including assessment techniques, management of a variety of disorders, and service delivery. It will include practical hands-on problem solving with individuals with Parkinson's disease, and will facilitate participants to reflect on their current practice to promote optimal function in their patients.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify and Understand the signs and symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (PD)
  • Understand the resulting impact of these signs and symptomos on the individual's function and participation
  • Administer appropriate evidence based assessment tools for PD
  • Understand current evidence and perspectives for managing symptoms associated with PD
  • Design and implement a suitable rehabilitation programme for someone with mild to moderate PD
  • Contribute to the development of a local minimum data set for assessment of people with PD

Prerequisites

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.

Presenters

Sandra Brauer


Sandy is a physiotherapist and current Head of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland. Prof Brauer conducts research aiming to better understand the underlying motor control mechanisms contributing to altered postural control, particularly in populations with neurological disorders such as stroke and Parkinson's disease, or advanced age, and to develop better physiotherapy assessment techniques and rehabilitation strategies. This research has subsequently developed to encompass prevention strategies and the investigation of the cost-effectiveness of intervention, to better facilitate the translation of research evidence into clinical practice.

Robyn Lamont


Robyn Lamont is a research fellow and clinical educator in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland. Her research areas of interest are related to optimizing physical assessment and physiotherapy management of gait and community ambulation in Parkinson's disease. In addition to her research role Robyn is a Physiotherapist and Physiotherapy Clinical Educator in the student led Neurological Ageing and Balance Clinic at the University.
