Paediatric gait analysis and orthotic management: an optimal segment kinematics and alignment approach to rehabilitation (OSKAR)

Brought to you in collaboration with Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (SRAlab) in Chicago, and presented by esteemed paediatric and adult neurological physiotherapist Elaine Owen, this live online course explores a fresh approach to the observation and analysis of typical and atypical patterns of standing, stepping and walking with full gait cycles, OSKAR.

The kinematics and kinetics of standing and walking and the atypical gait patterns of disabling conditions will be reviewed, with particular reference to orthotic management and rehabilitation programs. Patient cases will focus on cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele and other neurological conditions, but are applicable to other diagnoses and adult conditions. A comprehensive manual accompanies the course.

A complete list of the course learning outcomes can be found in the information booklet accessed by the link below. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to apply the learned principles directly into their working practice.

The course will span across 6 weeks, with 5 half-days of interactive lectures and 1 full-day live on a Video Vector gait laboratory. Australian participants have the choice of enrolling and attending the live versions of each session, OR watching the recordings of the live sessions in their own time.

Elaine has postgraduate qualifications in Lower Limb Orthotic Biomechanics and Clinical Gait Analysis (University of Strathclyde), and a MSc in Rehabilitation Studies which included a thesis about orthotic management of neurological conditions, normal gait and standing.

Elaine has undertaken the basic and advanced Gait Analysis Instructional Course of the European Society of Movement Analysis of Adults and Children (ESMAC), adult and paediatric Bobath (NDT) training and study at The Institute for Conductive Education in Budapest. She uses an eclectic approach in the management of neurological disabilities, with an emphasis on a biomechanical approach to rehabilitation.

From 1983 until 2015, as well as practising clinically, Elaine was Head of Paediatric Physiotherapy for North West Wales. She now concentrates solely on clinical work and lecturing.
