Gerontological Physiotherapy Level 1

This course is appropriate for AHPRA registered physiotherapists only
Suitable for Emergency Department physios

This course aims to improve your knowledge and skills relevant to the physiotherapy assessment and treatment of common conditions of older people. It takes an in-depth look at the ageing process, chronic disease management, pharmacology and pain management, delirium, dementia and depression, falls and balance, strategies to optimise physical function and use of outcome measures.

Please note: There is 12 hours of online pre-course work to be completed prior to the course.

This course is a mandatory component of the experiential titling pathwayin Gerontological Physiotherapy.
This course has been developed with a contemporary education design tosupport a variety of individual learning styles. Each module is supported witha range of extensive pre-learning, including audio-visual, research articles,Guidelines and more.

A range of MCQs for each module further supports the individuals learning andpreparation to optimise the face to face component of the course. Therefore itis recommended that participants register early to enable supply of therequired pre-learning beforehand, in adequate time to make their way througheach module.

Learning outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of age-related changes that affect movement and differentiate these from chronic disease impairments
  • Understand when and how to use common assessment tools of impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions that older adults have
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of a physiotherapist in the continuum of care from preventative health to frailty
  • Identify important evidence that supports physiotherapy practice in areas such as continence, falls, dementia, and depression and be able to utilise this in practice

Prerequisites

  • It is recommended that participants register early to enable supply of the required pre-learning beforehand, in adequate time to make their way through each module.

Nicola Kertanegara


Nicola Kertanegara graduated from Sydney University in 2006 and has been working in aged care and rehabilitation her entire career. She has been the aged care senior Physiotherapist at RNSH for many years and is now the rehabilitation coordinator for the North Shore Ryde LHD. She has been on the gerontology APA committee for many years and was chair of the gerontology APA committee and the NSW representative on the National Gerontology committee. She also writes and presents lecture and tutorial material for the aged care components for Sydney University undergraduates and masters Physiotherapy program. She is currently returning back to work after having 3 small children and is very tired!

Shiva Gopalan


Daniel Treacy


Daniel Treacy is the Physiotherapy Advisor for SESLHD who completed his PhD with the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, University of Sydney in 2021. Daniel's PhD investigated increasing and measuring physical activity within the rehabilitation setting. Daniel is the Co-chair of the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation Rehabilitation Network and a member of the NSW Health Systems Advisory Council. Daniel has a clinical background in aged care and rehabilitation.

Rik Dawson


Rik Dawson is a titled Gerontological Physiotherapist and is a Director for the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Rik is the APA representative for the National Aged Care Alliance. Rik is the Clinical Governance Manger for Dimple Physiotherapy which employs physios to over 2000 RACFs and community programs in nationally..

Sarina Priori


Amanda Cooke


Amanda has been a member of the gerontology committee for the past 5 years and currently works with the frail aged in both the public and private hospital sector. She is currently enrolled in the pain management master`s programme through Sydney University. In previous roles, Amanda has worked in management in the aged care sector as well as in rehabilitation. Her ongoing focus is to try to bring the best that our profession can bring to this often clinically complex and vulnerable patient group.
