Considering hip strength impairments in the management of people with unilateral knee osteoarthritis. It's role in function and balance

Lower hip abduction strength in people with knee osteoarthritis has been demonstrated in systematic reviews. Hip strength in directions other than abduction is inconsistent or lacking. The addition of hip strengthening to quadriceps strengthening has shown superior benefits across pain and functional outcomes. However, greater benefits can be mediated by the type of hip exercise in addition to quadriceps that is selected. Our understanding of the best type of exercise for people with knee osteoarthritis is not understood. This research into understanding strength impairments, changes in hip muscle structure and how it associates to function is aimed at advancing our understanding of how to tailor the best type and intensity of hip exercise for the greatest benefits for people with knee osteoarthritis.
