Occupational health issues for children using digital technologies

This presentation will outline the main concerns around children's physical health and use of digital technologies, especially screen use. It will describe various study designs used to develop evidence, including: qualitative studies, laboratory studies, field trials and epidemiological studies. It will also outline the current problem of conflicting guidelines and advice and the need for a transdisciplinary approach which considers the whole child.

Leon Straker


Leon Straker is a John Curtin Distinguished Professor in the School of Allied Health, Curtin University. After starting work as a paediatric physiotherapist in Perth's children hospital he has worked in community and occupational health – focussed on the impact of technology on the physical health of children and adults. His research on children and digital technologies started with the introduction of laptop computers into high schools in the 1990s and has followed the technology developments as they came to be used by younger and younger children, through desktop computers, electronic games and now mobile touch screen devices like smart phones and tablet computers. He is listed in the top 1% of scientists globally and ranked #1 in Australia and #44 globally for peer-reviewed papers on children and technology. He is ranked #3 in Australia and #63 globally in the field of Human Factors. He has published >320 peer-reviewed journal papers that have >8,000 citations and >11,000 Altmetric mentions. He has published guidelines on wise use of computers and electronic games and co-chaired the development of Early Childhood Australia's Statement on Young Children and Digital Technologies. He is currently leading the Health components of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child and an ARC Linkage grant.
