Adult gait and running analysis and retraining
Course:Adult gait and running analysis and retraining
This course provides in-depth insight into higher level mobility analysis and retraining post-neurological injury in the adult population. It includes gait and running analysis and retraining. The course combines a lecture day, covering both paediatric and adult components, and a practical day devoted exclusively to neurological issues. You should have some experience in treating the neurological population with gait and mobility limitations.
Learning outcomes
- Understand the impact of speed and age on gait performance
- Understand an impairment-focused approach to gait analysis, and gain further knowledge of video-based observational gait analysis
- Understand the biomechanical features of gait disorders in people with stroke, acquired brain/traumatic brain injury (and/or Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy)
- Assess and prescribe exercise to improve higher level mobility including running in the neurologically impaired population
Prerequisites
- This course is available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists and may be also available to other AHPRA registered practitioners.
Presenters
Gavin Williams
A/Prof Gavin Williams PhD FACP has worked in neurological rehabilitation for over 25 years. He is the inaugural Associate Professor of Physiotherapy Rehabilitation, a joint position appointed between Epworth Healthcare and The University of Melbourne. In this role, Gavin works clinically in the neurological rehabilitation unit at 0.5EFT and in a research role at 0.5EFT. Since he began working at the Epworth Hospital 23 years ago, he has developed a program to teach advanced gait and running skills to people with neurological injuries. This program led to his doctoral studies titled ‘The development of a high-level mobility assessment tool (HiMAT) for people with traumatic brain injury'. Since that time he has been a Post-doctoral Research Fellow focusing on the assessment, classification and treatment of mobility limitations following traumatic brain injury.Gavin was awarded Fellowship to the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2011. He has over 80 peer-reviewed journal publications and over 120 international and national conference presentations. He was also involved in the development of a new classification system for Paralympic athletics which was implemented at the London Paralympics. Gavin recently completed a NHMRC TRIP fellowship at the University of Melbourne.
Annie Chappell
Annie Chappell (MPhty(Paed)), MACP has worked in paediatrics for over 20 years. Annie recently submitted her PhD in the area of biomechanics and motor control, focusing on running training in youth with cerebral palsy. She is a Senior Paediatric Physiotherapist at Western Kids Health in Perth, with clinical focus on early intervention, physical disability and sports. In this role she holds a research portfolio and is working on a project looking at running in children with hypermobility disorders. Annie has been an invited speaker both in Australia and overseas and is a published author.
