Pain Physiotherapy Level 1 - Parts A and B

The Pain Physiotherapy Level 1 course outlines the key principles of Pain and Pain Management which can be immediately transferred to practice. This course presents this foundational knowledge to support physiotherapists who are new, recently graduated or experienced (across all the different disciplines) and are looking to expand, refresh and better integrate their knowledge in the area of pain physiotherapy.


The aims of this course is to:

1. Understand the burden of pain throughout society
2. Develop a biopsychosocial model for the assessment and management of pain
3. Be able to understand the need for a person-centred approach to pain assessment and management

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the burden of chronic pain on both society and the individuals living with it
  • Demonstrate an understanding of important pain-related terminology
  • Apply a basic biopsychosocial framework for the assessment and management of pain
  • Use a biopsychosocial clinical reasoning approach as a case presentation methodology and as an educational treatment tool with patients
  • Recognise common pain related conditions
  • Consider the relative appropriateness of different forms of treatment approaches for pain related presentations (such as hands-on treatment and self-management skills)

Prerequisites

  • This course is appropriate for AHPRA registered physiotherapists, nurses and other allied health practitioners.
  • Completion of three online modules purchased directly through The Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA (Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists) prior to attending the face to face course ($85.50).
  • Further information regarding this will be provided upon registration.
  • Please note that information will be shared between the APA and The Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA (Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists) for the purpose confirming completion of the modules.

Presenters

Tania Gardner


Dr Tania Gardner is an APA Titled Pain Physiotherapist and censor for the College of Physiotherapy (Pain Specialty) and is a Lecturer at the University of Sydney. She was a Senior Physiotherapist in the Department of Pain Medicine, St Vincent's Hospital Sydney, for over 10 years treating complex chronic pain patients, delivering pain management programs as well as individual and interdisciplinary interventions. Tania was integral in the establishment of the Reboot online program, the first multidisciplinary online pain program in Australia and continues to be involved in the ongoing research and development of the program. She has a strong interest in chronic pain, patient engagement and motivation and psychologically informed practice. Tania completed her PhD in 2017 investigating Patient-led goals in CLBP at the University of Sydney.
