Introduction to pilates for neurological clients

This course is designed for physiotherapists with some experience of working with neurological patients, but who have little or no Pilates experience.

This course aims to introduce some Pilates exercises and equipment, the principles, and how they can be applied when rehabilitating clients with neurological conditions.

Learning outcomes

  • Appreciate the historical development of the Pilates method and outline the fundamental philosophy and principles underlying Pilates
  • Understand the research evidence for the efficacy of the Pilates method and applying to the neurological population
  • Understand the benefit of mat and reformer based Pilates exercise for neurologically intact individuals and demonstrate how to adapt this treatment tool for clients with neurological impairment (both motor and non-motor)
  • Learn how Pilates can be used as a tool to progress a client from hands on facilitation to strength training
  • Learn how Pilates can be used functionally to ensure it is goal directed and patient-centered

Prerequisites

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.
  • Pre-reading materials distributed at registration cut off date.

Jane Costello


Jane Costello's methods personify the bespoke treatment philosophy of this practice, through a passionate attention to detail in addressing the specific needs of each individual client to maximise their rehabilitation potential. Jane has extensive experience in the area of neurological rehabilitation as both a Physiotherapist and rehabilitation Pilates instructor.Throughout her professional career, Jane has been inspired to help neurological rehabilitation clients return to their highest level of ability, regardless of their starting level. This includes balance work and a range of recreational and sporting pursuits (modified or otherwise) such as running, cycling, swimming, hiking, and skiing. She is dedicated to helping empower all she works with to return to a feeling of joy in movement and a sense of overall wellness. Jane has found that the combination of Physiotherapy and rehabilitation Pilates can be particularly effective in many patients in achieving these goals.Jane completed her Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) in 2000 at the University of Melbourne and since then as a Physiotherapist has been dedicated to neurological rehabilitation both in Australia and the UK. She has also worked as a Clinical Pilates instructor at many studios in Melbourne, the UK, and in Vancouver, Canada.Jane started personal Pilates practice in 1998 to manage her own neck pain with such amazing results that she commenced her training in Pilates instruction. She continued her Pilates throughout two pregnancies, and her speedy return to activities such as running, cycling, and skiing, is testament to the benefits of and her commitment to Pilates.Jane achieved Level 1 Instructor accreditation with the Australian Pilates Method Association in 2003. Since then she has upgraded her Pilates qualifications with a Certificate IV in Pilates Instruction (2008) and a Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction (2011) with Pilates International. She has also completed Therapeutic Muscle Stretching on the Pilates Reformer in 2011. In 2015 completed her teacher training enabelling her present for the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI). She is now a lead presenter of the APPI Equipment series in Melbourne, enthusiastically teaching other health professionals to become high quality Pilates instructors.Jane is a member and registered instructor of Pilates Alliance Australasia (PAA) and a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (Neurology group). She is the co-creator and presenter of the physiotherapy course “An Introduction to Pilates for Neurological Clients” run for the Australian Physiotherapy Association since 2009. Jane also volunteers for Disabled Winter sports (DWA) as a qualified adaptive snow sports guide.Rehabilitation is ultimately about returning to joy in life and Jane works with all her clients to facilitate the steps to reach their goals.
