The shoulder theory and practice - Online delivery

Delivered entirely online for the first time in APA history - learn from anywhere you have internet access.

This highly coveted, evidence-based course is founded on extensive clinical experience in assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation of shoulder pathology and is extensively linked to the most recent research publications from a variety of disciplines.

Delivered by world authority, Prof Jeremy Lewis PhD, FCSP with emphasis placed on clinical reasoning to support management decisions, this course synthesises the complex relationships between; the shoulder & body biomechanics, pain science, lifestyle, patient psychosocial factors, beliefs and expectations, best practice and more.

Participants completing this will gain a greater understanding of the anatomy, biomechanics, assessment and evidence-based treatment of this interesting and complicated region of the body.

Taught in over 40 countries, continually updated and integrating the latest research and evidence, this popular course covers a biopsychosocial approach for the assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions involving the shoulder region.
There are two components to undertaking this course:

1. Online theory - Participants are expected to complete the theory (provided online) component of this course before participating the live interactive sessions. Participants will be given access to the theory to undertake in their own time, two weeks out from the live interactive sessions in which they register.

2. Online interactive sessions – Participate in three 4.5 hour live online interactive sessions with Prof. Jeremy Lewis where you can watch the guru himself demonstrate his various techniques and ask any relevant questions directly. You will be given special access to videos of the practical components of the course for a period of 3 months after the interactive sessions. Use these videos in your own time to help you put into practice what you have learnt in the course.

Learning outcomes

  • To develop a better understanding and knowledge of the clinical anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder region
  • To appreciate the importance of taking a biopsychosocial approach to patient management.
  • To develop a comprehensive subjective and physical evaluation strategy for the shoulder that considers local and referred sources of pain and directs the clinician to develop an appropriate management plan.
  • To develop greater confidence with the physical assessment of the shoulder region and a better understanding of the evidence for the use of the selected assessment techniques.
  • To develop a greater understanding and knowledge of various pathologies of the shoulder girdle
  • To develop greater competency in the management of patients with a variety of shoulder pathologies.
  • To review the research evidence relating to the influence of posture and muscle imbalance and its relationship with shoulder pathology.
  • To review the evidence underpinning the pathology, and the assessment and management of various shoulder conditions, including rotator cuff related shoulder pain and frozen shoulder
  • To review the research evidence evaluating the use of diagnostic imaging as part of the management for musculoskeletal disorders of the shoulder
  • To review the research evidence evaluating the use of injections as part of the management for musculoskeletal disorders of the shoulder.
  • To develop a greater confidence in the use of exercise therapy and other techniques for managing shoulder conditions and evaluation of the efficacy of the techniques, balanced against the evidence base for using these techniques.

Prerequisites

  • This course is available to qualified and AHPRA registered phsyiotherapists and may be also available to other AHPRA registered practitioners
