Important concepts for pelvic pain education

RESEARCH FOCUS While pain science education is regularly used to help patients with musculoskeletal pain, its use in other chronic pain conditions such as persistent pelvic pain has been limited. New research aims to change that.

Pain science education (PSE) is an important aspect of treating painful musculoskeletal conditions including chronic low back pain and osteoarthritis.

It aims to explain how pain works to people with chronic pain and helps to shift misconceptions about it and to teach people how to self-manage their pain.

Managing chronic pain

Chronic pain affects both physical and mental health and imposes a significant personal and financial burden on Australian society.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in five Australians over the age of 45
lives with chronic pain, at an estimated annual cost of $139 billion.

They are five times as likely as those without chronic pain to be limited in their daily activities and three times as likely to be dispensed opioids, among other analgesics.
