Insurance Changes

APA welcomes Aon as our new insurance broker

A new partnership to support APA members with quality insurance coverage, service and claims support

The APA takes seriously our responsibility to ensure members have access to robust insurance cover, backed by high-quality service and support.

As part of this commitment, we review our member insurance arrangements annually, considering the strength and suitability of the cover provided, the service experience for members and the feedback we receive from you.

Following our latest review, we are pleased to announce that Aon will become the APA’s new insurance broker from 17 December 2026.

Aon is a leading global insurance broker and risk adviser, with extensive insurance expertise and a strong focus on client service. We’re excited to welcome Aon as an APA partner and look forward to working together to continue strengthening the insurance experience, support and resources available to APA members.

We also acknowledge and thank BMS, our former broker, for its partnership with the APA and the support it has provided to our members.

What's changing – and what isn't?

It’s important to understand the difference between an insurance broker and an insurer.

The insurer provides and underwrites the insurance cover. The broker works with the APA and our members to arrange and manage the insurance program and provides support, including when a claim needs to be made.

For APA members whose membership includes the APA member insurance program:

  • The insurer of the APA member insurance program remains Vero. There is no change to the insurer as part of this transition.
  • What is changing is the APA’s insurance broker. The incumbent, BMS, will remain the APA’s broker until 16 December 2026, with Aon taking over from 17 December 2026.
  • Under our new arrangements, Aon will provide dedicated support to APA and members, including insurance program management, claims support and member education and resources.

For more information, please refer to the Change in cover notice (PDF).

What happens if you need to make a claim?

The important thing is to contact the right broker based on when the claim or incident arises.

On or before 16 December 2026 – BMS

If your claim or incident arises on or before 16 December 2026, please notify BMS, the APA’s insurance broker until that date.

Phone: 1800 931 068

Email: apa@bmsgroup.com

On or after 17 December – Aon

If your claim or incident arises on or after 17 December 2026, please contact Aon, who will support you through the claims process.

Phone: 1800 806 494

Email: apa@aon.com

If you are unsure who you should contact, please contact APA member support and we can help direct you to the appropriate team.

What about other insurance you may currently hold through BMS?

Some APA members have chosen to purchase additional insurance products through BMS separately from the insurance included with their APA membership. These may include business insurance, entity insurance or cyber insurance.

These policies are separate from the APA member insurance program.

If you hold additional insurance through BMS, you can expect to receive your usual renewal offer and communications from BMS. You may choose to continue as a BMS client for these policies at your own discretion. There is no requirement to move these policies because the APA has appointed a new broker. In due course, Aon will also make a range of additional insurance options available for APA members to consider, including insurance relevant to physiotherapists, practices and businesses.

We’ll provide members with more information about these options as they become available, so you can consider what is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the APA PIPPL Insurance compliant with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (PhysioBA) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra)?

Yes, the APA PIPPL Insurance policy complies with and exceeds all requirements set by the PhysioBA and Ahpra.

APA’s broker transition: what it means for my coverage?

The appointment of Aon as APA’s new insurance broker does not mean there is a change to the insurer providing APA Member Insurance. Vero remains the insurer. Members should continue to refer to their policy documentation for the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions that apply to their cover.

What do I do about my insurance claims?

During the transition, who you contact will depend on when your claim arises.

For claims arising on or before 16 December 2026, please continue to notify BMS on 1800 931 068 or via apa@bmsgroup.com, APA’s insurance broker until this date.

For claims arising on or after 17 December 2026, please notify Aon, APA’s new insurance broker. Aon will provide claims support and advocacy, including coordinating with the insurer throughout the claims process.

If you are unsure who to contact about a claim, please contact APA member support and we can help direct you to the right team.

How do I get Entity Insurance?

You will need to create an account and complete an application or purchase Entity Insurance via the member-only BMS Portal. Please visit the APA Member Insurance page. For more information, contact BMS on 1800 931 068 or via apa@bmsgroup.com. Please note that if you do not apply for entity insurance coverage your practice is not automatically covered as part of your standard APA membership and insurance policy.

If my employer or union provides insurance cover, do I need individual insurance?

We recommend that physiotherapists consider holding their own individual professional insurance, even where insurance is provided through an employer or union.

Employer or union arrangements can provide important protection, but that cover may be linked to your employment, workplace or the specific duties you perform in that role. This means it may not extend to physiotherapy services you provide outside your usual employment – for example, volunteering with a community sports club, undertaking additional work or providing services independently.

Your circumstances can also change. If you move employers, change roles or cease employment, the insurance available through your workplace may change or end. It is also important to consider how you would be protected if a complaint or claim relating to earlier work arises at a later date.

Holding your own insurance can provide an additional layer of protection that is attached to you as an individual, rather than relying solely on arrangements provided through your workplace or union.

As with any insurance, cover is subject to the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the policy. If you are unsure about your existing cover or whether APA Member Insurance is appropriate for your circumstances, we recommend seeking advice about your individual insurance needs.
