2022 VIC Branch End of Year Breakfast

Join us at the annual Vic Branch End of Year Breakfast, to be held at the MCG.

The keynote speaker will be Peter O'Sullivan, presenting ‘Caring for people with disabling back pain – can we do better?'.

Low back pain is the leading cause of disability world-wide. 25-30% of people with acute low back pain go on to develop persistent and disabling pain. In-spite of the enormous health care costs spend on the care for people with low back pain, the disability burden is growing.

There is growing evidence that once serious pathology (1% of people in primary care) is excluded, the predictors of persistent pain are factors such as unhelpful pain beliefs, over-protective behaviours and pain related distress. Targeting these factors provides opportunities for care.

The management of low back pain represents a ‘wicked' problem. Both societal and clinician beliefs are often not aligned to the evidence, care provided is often low-value and risky, high-value care is under-funded, clinicians often work in silo's, and clinicians often the lack confidence and skills to provide it.

Physiotherapists have an opportunity to lead in the provision of better care for people with low back pain, to reduce their disability burden. In order to do this multi-level system change is needed.
