Telehealth diet and exercise programs deliver for knee OA

A recent study published by researchers at the University of Melbourne and Medibank shows that a weight loss and exercise program delivered by telehealth can significantly improve knee osteoarthritis. A conversation with Professor Kim Bennell and Dr Catherine Keating about the study.

Aquatic physiotherapy

Sophie Heywood, Jillian Chua and Anna Scheer from the Aquatic group present five discussion points about the benefits of aquatic physiotherapy in rehabilitation and the prevention and management of a variety of conditions.

1. Aquatic plyometric training is effective in improving strength, jumping and sprinting

Interest in using plyometric exercises to improve power and function in older adults (Vetrovsky et al 2019) and clinical populations (Cordner et al 2021) is growing.

Knowledge is a powerful driver of change

When Claire Baldwin stepped onto the stage as a ballerina in her teens, little did she know her dream of becoming a physiotherapist for the Australian Ballet would change and lead her down a very different path—creating positive changes through research and education on the world stage.

As an early graduate, Claire Baldwin, APAM, wasn’t heading directly towards a career in research.

Tablet-based exercise in wrist, hand and finger injuries

Do feedback-guided exercises performed on a tablet touchscreen hasten return to work, reduce healthcare usage and improve clinical recovery more than a home exercise program prescribed on paper? Q&A with María-Dolores Cortés-Vega.

Your trial compared two different approaches to providing a home exercise program after a bone or soft tissue injury of the wrist, hand and/or fingers. What are some examples of the sorts of injuries that the study participants had?

The rehab revolution

The tech-driven pandemic response is changing the way that patients with neurological conditions can continue their rehabilitation.

This surge in digital connectivity is uniting physiotherapists, researchers and patients like never before. The use of telehealth to provide group exercise classes for those with Parkinson’s disease has proved an invaluable tool for clinician and patient, writes Denis Giguere.

Quadriceps weakness after total knee replacement

One of the Physiotherapy Research Foundation recipients opens up about their research.

Wei-Ju Chang wants to know why—why people who undergo a total knee joint replacement experience weakness in the quadriceps despite intensive physiotherapy rehabilitation.

Why, despite improvement in function, around 20–30 per cent of these people still have ongoing pain and weakness in the thigh muscle.

Compression therapy study has global implications

The results of a recently published study promises to change the way patients with leg infections and swelling are managed.

Cellulitis is a common and painful bacterial skin infection, contributing to about 130,000 emergency department presentations per year, with about 70,000 of those requiring admission to hospital.

These are startling statistics, says Elizabeth Webb, APAM, who three years ago initiated research to test whether compression therapy could prevent recurrent cellulitis of the leg.
