Keeping older people steady on their feet

As the 2025 Falls Guidelines for Community Care bring prevention, screening and targeted interventions into focus, their real-world impact will depend on how clinicians translate recommendations into everyday care. For physiotherapist Scott Lynch, the guidelines are not an abstract framework but a practical tool woven into systems, assessment and the culture of his mobile practice.

Physios focus on falls

As the updated 2025 Falls Guidelines sharpen the focus on prevention, screening and targeted interventions, their real-world impact will depend on how effectively they are embedded into everyday clinical practice.

With falls posing potentially life-changing consequences for older people, physiotherapists are uniquely positioned to lead prevention efforts through evidence-based assessment and tailored exercise programs that address balance and mobility.

Acute vestibular online learning package

Physiotherapists from the Royal Melbourne Hospital describe the development and feasibility testing of an online vestibular learning package aimed at improving clinician confidence and knowledge in the assessment and management of acute dizziness.

Dizziness represents around four per cent of emergency department presentations in Australia.

Standing strong

APA Policy and Government Relations Senior Policy Advisor Mirjana Jovetic explains why it’s so important to champion access to falls prevention programs.

Falls prevention access and funding is a key policy and government relations priority for the APA.

Physiotherapy-led prevention reduces falls and fractures. It improves strength, balance, confidence and mobility, while enhancing a person’s participation and quality of life.

It also reduces system costs through avoided hospitalisations and surgery.
