From bed rest to better mobility in hospitals

Functional decline in older adults in hospital is common, consequential and largely preventable. Dr Julie Adsett outlines how targeted, system-wide approaches, supported by mobility quality indicators, can help hospitals measure, understand and improve patient activity.

Hospitals are designed to treat illness and stabilise acute conditions, yet for many older patients, hospital admission can mark the start of a different kind of decline.

The power of digital technology

Over the course of my career, I have come to see digital technology not as an add-on to physiotherapy, but as a fundamental enabler of high-value care.

My interest began as a business owner. Technology improved communication, streamlined operations and supported more consistent care, creating a better experience for both patients and clinicians.

My work has since focused on developing and evaluating digital health solutions that extend physiotherapy beyond traditional clinic walls.

Diagnostic labels affect patient expectations

A recent study of diagnostic labels for whiplash and neck pain has highlighted the effect the choice of label can have on patient expectations of care and recovery. Melissa Trudinger reports.

A study looking at different names for neck pain experienced after a motor vehicle crash – commonly referred to as whiplash – has suggested that using different names may result in different patient expectations about recovery and management strategies.
