PD BRIEFS The APA runs a significant number of professional development courses, both face-to-face and online, throughout the year. Here are some highlights among the upcoming courses.

Physio working with a child with a disability

DISABILITY PHYSIOTHERAPY 

Physiotherapists should have the knowledge, understanding and skills to provide high-quality physiotherapy services to people with a range of disabilities. 

This course introduces models of best practice in the disability field and highlights both commonalities and differences with other areas of physiotherapy practice. 

It also covers issues relating to the funding landscape within the disability sector—with a focus on the NDIS—and applies this knowledge to practice. ‘

Disability Physiotherapy Level 1—Part B’ is a live, virtual and highly interactive classroom. 

It will be presented online at 7 pm AEST on 17 February, 20 May and 14 October. 

Part A must be completed prior to undertaking Part B.

AQUATIC PHYSIOTHERAPY 

This one-day course equips participants with both practical and theoretical knowledge on the clinical implications of the physiology of immersion, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, rotational control and exercise in water. 

Participants will improve their evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning skills and risk management strategies. 

Additionally, practical sessions will cover a variety of manual techniques and exercise programs and progressions, making it ideal for recent graduates, physios moving into the practice area or experienced physios undertaking a refresher course. 

‘Aquatic Physiotherapy Level 1—Parts B and C’ will be presented on 1 March in Cheltenham, Victoria and 5 April in Eastwood, New South Wales. 

Part A must be completed prior to undertaking Parts B and C. 

This course is only available to Ahpra-registered physiotherapists.

BASIC PLASTER 

Learn about the principles and practical applications of casting, focusing on acute slabs and common complete casts for the upper and lower limbs. 

This course covers the types of casting materials available and their properties; techniques for applying short arm, scaphoid and short leg casts; and how to appraise the casts and understand the care, warnings and precautions involved. 

‘Basic plaster’ will be presented on 8 March in St Leonards, New South Wales.
