While the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games allows us to celebrate the achievements of the selected athletes, Jane Rooney says the upcoming online symposium ‘Finding the edge—optimising athletic performance’ is a chance to learn directly from members of various Olympic high-performance teams.

Why the topic ‘Finding the edge—optimising athletic performance’?

Athletic performance optimisation is a complex process that demands the integration of multiple disciplines in order to address the broad range of capabilities necessary for success.

These disciplines include medical practitioners, physiotherapists, sports psychologists, biomechanists, strength and conditioning staff, dietitians, and coaches alongside the athletes themselves.

This symposium will explore many pertinent performance factors from a range of experts, furthering the understanding of the complexity of the role of the physiotherapist in this environment.

Tell us a bit about the program and the presenters

Presenters include well-respected leaders in their field, including expert sports and exercise physiotherapists and other recognised expert physiotherapists, a sports psychologist, a sports dietitian, medical practitioners and other members of the high-performance team.

A panel discussion will explore contributions from the multidisciplinary team in an elite athletic case. More details will follow shortly about the invited speakers and the program.

Who would benefit from attending?

Of course, private practitioners and physiotherapists interested in sport at any level, including elite and professional levels of sporting competition.

All levels of postgraduate physiotherapists will benefit from the contemporary evidence and complex cases presented, including titled, registrars and specialist members.

What are you most looking forward to with the symposium?

As an experienced Specialist Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2009) and an associate clinical professor at Swinburne University, I am passionate about lifelong learning and the pursuit of excellence in clinical practice.

I treat many elite and professional athletes and always enjoy learning from other professionals, in order to continue delivering the best care possible to my clients.

As the director of Physio Educators, I am acutely aware of the importance and need of continued, accessible academic challenges for experienced sports physiotherapists in Australia, particularly during our current health crisis.

After the amazing success of ‘The athlete through the lifespan’ online symposium, which explored tissue vulnerability across the lifespan to appreciate injury aetiology and clinical management at different developmental phases, I am excited to be working with the Australian College of Physiotherapists and the APA to deliver another of these events to physiotherapists around the world.

The ‘Finding the edge—optimising athletic performance’ symposium will be held live virtually on 8 May 2021. Further details on the program and presenters can be found here by keyword searching ‘Finding the edge’.
