Setting the record straight about physiotherapists

The APA recently launched its ‘Valuing Skills’ initiative.

This initiative features materials such as factsheets and infographics to help various audiences—funders, policymakers and the public—differentiate between physiotherapists and other professions.

These materials articulate in objective, factual terms the difference in training, skills and scope that a physiotherapist brings to the table.

Reinforcing the highest standards

The APA has updated its member code of conduct. APA National President Scott Willis APAM and APA CEO Anja Nikolic outline what you need to know and urge all members to familiarise themselves with the new code.

Across the healthcare landscape, few professions are as intimately connected with the physical and emotional wellbeing of patients as that of physiotherapy.

A first contact physio in London

ADVOCACY APA member Daniel Hiep is an Australian physiotherapist who practised as a first contact practitioner in the UK. As we continue to explore overseas models of first contact physiotherapy, Daniel shares his experiences with the APA Policy and Government Relations team.

What did you know about the first contact practitioner (FCP) model before moving to the UK?

Actually, I was not aware of the FCP model of practice prior to moving to the UK in September 2019.

Integrated healthcare is best on ground

Standards of healthcare in professional and elite sport hold valuable lessons for those designing our health policies, argues APA General Manager, Policy and Government Relations Simon Tatz.

Professional sport has developed a system of coordinated and connected healthcare that in a perfect world would be the standard for everyone.

These professional leagues and associations understand how to provide best practice healthcare for their athletes.

Safe and competent dry needling

In this comprehensive three-part course, physiotherapists gain, or update, the knowledge and skills required to practise dry needling safely, explain presenters Peter Selvaratnam FACP and Jane Rooney FACP.

Why is ‘Dry Needling Physiotherapy Level 1’ recommended?

Dry needling is a popular treatment approach and can be highly effective when applied appropriately.

However, it can also be very risky—medico-legal claims for needling malpractice have been some of the largest in the profession.

Leadership and service

I write this Final Word on the day of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

As late as the night before, it would have been on a different theme.

Today I feel compelled to reflect on what it means to lead, serve and sacrifice.

The Queen became the patron of the Australian Physiotherapy Association in 1962.

Indeed, she was patron to over 500 organisations and although patronages are largely symbolic, they are bestowed on honourable, worthwhile causes after a diligent process of evaluation.
