Pursuing specialisation

Through research, mentorship and commitment to professional growth, musculoskeletal physiotherapist James Weir is helping to shape the future of physiotherapy.

James Weir MACP’s interest in physiotherapy began as a young rugby player.

Frequently sidelined by injuries, he encountered physiotherapists who seemed genuinely passionate about their work, sparking his curiosity about the profession.

‘The physiotherapists who looked after me were very skilled and clearly loved what they did,’ he recalls.

Let's break down barriers

Happy New Year. I hope you’ve enjoyed a refreshing break over the summer and are recharged for the challenges of 2025.

As your president-elect, I’ve often been asked why I chose to become a physiotherapist—a question that piques the interest of media and members alike.

Like many physiotherapists, my journey began with a positive encounter with the physiotherapy profession during my youth.

Helping children put their best foot forward

Rebecca Snowden has taken many small, deliberate steps in her paediatric physiotherapist career journey. But she took a big leap of faith when she was invited to help children and babies with a genetic condition known as club foot.

As a teenager growing up in Bendigo, Victoria, Rebecca Snowden MACP was always drawn to the idea of healing, although her initial career considerations varied between law and physiotherapy.

Ultimately she chose physiotherapy—a decision she’s never regretted.

Shifting pathways: the future of physiotherapy education

For people considering studying physiotherapy in Australia, there is more choice than ever. We look at how physiotherapy training has changed and where it is headed.

Once upon a time, physiotherapy students did most of their training at state-based colleges of health sciences like the Lincoln Institute of Health Sciences in Melbourne (which merged with La Trobe University in 1987) and Cumberland College of Health Sciences in Sydney (which became part of the University of Sydney in 1989).

Leading through experience

As I settle into my role as CEO at the APA, I am appreciative of how my clinical background and experience in member organisations have aided this transition.

As a physiotherapist, I keenly understand the level of training and study required in our profession.

My own experience delivering clinical physiotherapy, navigating the scope of practice, taking part in professional development and working extensively in the education sector has given me valuable insight that I have brought to this position.
