Snapshot: The Tagged Grant funding enabled Shane and his colleagues Lizzie Skinner, Julie Reeve and Peter Thomas to establish evidence-based minimum standards of practice (knowledge, skills and techniques) expected for physiotherapists who work within critical care in Australia and New Zealand.

Benefits to the profession: It is anticipated that these standards will lead to a higher quality of care provided by physiotherapists in critical care and subsequently improve patient health outcomes.

Shane Patman

FACP

Associate Professor Shane Patman is a Cardiorespiratory Specialist Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian
College of Physiotherapists in 2009), with his clinical career predominantly focused in critical care. To date he has 32
peer-reviewed publications, presented at multiple overseas conferences, supervised higher education research
students, and peer-reviewed grant applications and more than 180 pre-publication manuscripts.
Shane continues to be actively involved in research, as well as teaching and being an engaged member of the
profession nationally and internationally. He is currently the associate dean of the School of Physiotherapy at the
University of Notre Dame Australia and on the planning committee for the World Confederation for Physical Therapy
Congress 2019 in Geneva.
In 2016, he completed a second term as vice-president of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and in 2017
commenced as chair of the Australian Physiotherapy Council. Additionally, since 2011 he has been the inaugural
president of the International Confederation of Cardiorespiratory Physical Therapists.
