Trauma informed care

The presentation covers Trauma Informed Care (TIC) as it pertains to sexual assault trauma. It introduces the principles of TIC and practical approaches on how to apply TIC in clinical practice. The prevalence and biopsychosocial impact of sexual assault will be discussed together with possible survivor responses during treatment. With a focus on how to provide TIC in a manner that is safe for the patient - and protective for the physiotherapist.

Janine Stirling


Janine has been working in healthcare for close to three decades, initially as an Intensive Care and Emergency Nurse for 20 years, then more recently in mental health as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist. On weekends she facilitates psychoeducation groups at The Sydney Clinic (a Healthscope owned mental health hospital in Bronte, Sydney). During the week Janine operates a private practice where she offers individual counselling and psychotherapy. In a commitment to advancing the field of trauma informed care, specifically in sexual assault, Janine is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Sydney, exploring the neurobiological, physiological, and neuropsychological sequelae of sexual assault. It is hoped that this research will help inform healthcare professionals in their work with patients with this history_Qualifications: Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Finance), Bachelor of Nursing (includes qualifications in Midwifery, Community Health, and Psychiatry), Graduate Certificate Critical Care, Graduate Diploma Counselling, Master Counselling and Psychotherapy, PhD Candidate (Faculty of Medicine and Health – Sydney University).[BComm, BNurs, Grad.
