People handling across the lifespan lecture series: Looking after ourselves while performing manual tasks

Physiotherapists regularly perform manual tasks a a part of their daily work. We are taught some basic principles as undergraduates, but often don't expand our knowledge or understanding to protect us in the broad range of situations that might be encountered.

This session will include information on the current guidelines for performing ‘manual tasks' and will discuss the core competencies and building blocks of how we move. There have been many changes in the approach to manual handling ('how to lift') which will be discussed. In addition, the session will consider how we can facilitate natural movement patterns during people handling while minimising our own risk of injury.

One of the other sessions later in this series will look at translating this information into training other people in the realm of people handling.
A variety of case studies will be reviewed to assist translation to practice.

This session is the second in a series to be presented on people handling over the coming months.
