Interested in research but do not know where to begin?

Come and join seasoned researchers - Selina Parry and Michelle Paton - as they provide an overview of potential pathways into research in the field of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. Each presenter will provide an insight into their own individual research journey and give some useful tips and recommendations for those considering or have newly entered the research realm. The event will conclude with a panel discussion in which the audience may find out more about entering into the field of research.

  • Provide tips for those newly entering into the realm of research
  • Provide recommendations on how to find a supervisor/mentor to assist with guiding an individual's research pathway

Presenters

Selina Parry


Selina Parry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiotherapy and a Val and Al Rosenstrauss Fellow as well as Director of Engagement and Advancement for the School of Health Sciences. She has a PhD, Graduate Certificate in University Teaching and is a Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists. A/Prof Selina Parry leads a research team focused on improving recovery outcomes after critical illness and major surgery using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. She is passionate about working collaboratively together with patients, families and multidisciplinary team members to optimise research outcomes. She has over the past ten years spent considerable time in the United Kingdom and United States working together with leading research teams in the ICU space and most recently completed a Churchill Travelling Fellowship in 2023. She has published > 80 peer review publications and received international and national recognition for her teaching and research excellence.

Michelle Paton


Graduating from a Masters in Physiotherapy in 2001 from Griffith University, Michelle has specialised in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, in particular Critical Care, from graduation. After working in both QLD and the UK, Michelle returned to Melbourne in 2008 and completed a Masters of Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy in 2011. She is currently working at Monash Health as the Advanced Cardiac and Critical Care Physiotherapist and Critical Care and Surgical Services Physiotherapy Clinical Lead, and has just submitted her PhD investigating the effect of exercise dosage in ICU on functional outcomes and recovery.
