Spotting at-risk head injury situations in men's and women's football (soccer)

The short- and long-term consequences of head injuries in football (soccer) are a global concern given that >265 million people worldwide regularly play football and that head injuries (including concussion) accounting for around 20% of all medically assessed injuries. For both men and women, players are more likely to be injured by player-to-player contact when competing for an aerial ball, however, women are far more likely than men to be injured by the ball itself. Despite women being more likely to sustain a concussion as well as reporting more symptoms and possibly taking longer to recover than men, >80% of the concussion literature focuses on men only. This means that head injury identification, management and prevention have rarely been explored in relation to the sex and gender differences that exist between men and women. This interactive presentation will explore at risk head injury situations in both men's and women's football using match video analysis, as well as, discussing areas that should be considered from a head injury prevention perspective.
