Sports Physiotherapy Level 1 - Singapore

This course will explore the theoretical and practical sides of managing sporting injuries with an emphasis on current research. Presented topics include shoulder, ankle and knee injuries with focus specifically on ligament, tendon and muscle. Participants will also gain information on acute onfield management and travelling with a sports team, as well as a large practical component on taping techniques.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the various roles and responsibilities required of the sports physiotherapist working with teams.
  • Demonstrate ability to assimilate and apply knowledge relevant to prepare for different sporting environments (Nationally, Internationally) by ensuring that all equipment or supplies that may be required are available for use in the event of acute injury or illness at the training or competition site.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify medical and support facilities/resources appropriate to supporting athlete and support staff health at travel destination or home venue.
  • Demonstrate ability to assimilate and apply sports specific principles of preparation for travel including environmental conditions, travel and time zone considerations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of risk management assessment including location of venue emergency facilities and procedures, maintenance of injury and treatment records.
  • Assimilate and apply knowledge relevant to self-care and preparation for travel/ team duties as a physiotherapist including fitness, health and time management strategies
  • Demonstrate understanding of the definition, pathophysiology, modifying factors of concussion
  • Demonstrate ability to assimilate and apply best practice evidence based protocols for the assessment and management of concussion
  • Identify and have competence to apply best practice tools/methods for on field/ post game assessment of concussion.
  • Demonstrate ability to assimilate and apply best practice principles for step wise return to training and competition participation following concussion
  • Demonstrate ability to use taping as an evidence-based strategy targeted at different treatment aims in different sporting contexts, for example, to promote rest, protection, injury prevention and facilitation of healing.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify both indications and contraindications to application of taping techniques.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify and apply safe and effective principles of tape application and removal in the sporting context.
  • Demonstrate competency with taping the following joints: ankle, knee and shoulder

Maria Constantinou


Dr Maria Constantinou, PhD, MPhSt(Sports), BPhty, GradCertEd is an APA Titled Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist, an International Registered Sports Physical Therapist and Fellow of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation. Maria is a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, Australian Catholic University, and previously worked at Griffith University and The University of Queensland. Maria was awarded her PhD in 2016. Maria is Secretary on the Executive Board of the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy and a Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy Australia committee member. Maria was the Polyclinic and Team Physiotherapy Programs Coordinator for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and has extensive clinical experience, having also worked as a Sports Physiotherapist at many major games including the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games and the Vanuatu 2017 Pacific Mini Games. Maria's clinical, teaching and research interests comprise the prevention and management of sports injuries, sports and therapeutic taping, reflective practice in health education and gait and function in hip osteoarthritis, the focus of her PhD studies. Maria's publications include the book Therapeutic Taping for Musculoskeletal Conditions which is translated in several languages. Maria's passion for the international advancement of sports physiotherapy and supporting physiotherapy in developing countries has seen her involved in the establishment of programs in the Pacific Nations and presenting in over 20 countries at national and international conferences, workshops, and professional development events.

Mark Brown


Mark Brown (B.App.Sc(Phty); MHSc(Sports Physio); MBA; GradCertHEd) has post graduate qualifications in Sports Physiotherapy, management and education. Mark is an Australian Physiotherapy Association Titled Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist, a Fellow of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation, an IFSPT International Registered Sports Physical Therapist, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Managers and Leaders. Mark has extensive clinical and leadership experience at major sporting events including as the Director of Physiotherapy Services for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Venue Medical Manager for Aquatics, Triathlon and Marathon at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and also worked at the Athens 2004 Olympics, Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2015 Port Moresby Pacific Games and Vanuatu 2017 Pacific Mini Games. Mark served on the Oceania National Olympic Committees Medical Commission from 2014-2017, and the Australian Sports Medicine Federation Fellows Executive Committee since 2019. Mark has taught in both undergraduate and post graduate physiotherapy programs, with the focus of his teaching being sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and management of health services. He has also conducted many training programs for health professionals, coaches, and other athlete support staff in over 20 countries. Mark's publications include the book ‘Therapeutic Taping for Musculoskeletal Conditions' which has been translated into several languages, two chapters in the International Olympic Committee ‘Manual of Emergency Medicine in Sport', and he was the Editor of the Tenth Edition of ‘Sports Medicine for Sports Trainers'. His research interest areas relate primarily to improving safety and performance in sport and physical activity and he has both published and presented on sports injury prevention and performance enhancement, the prevention and management of medical emergencies in sport, taping techniques for the prevention and management of musculoskeletal conditions and is currently a PhD Scholar investigating ‘Participant preparation and sports injuries in older athletes'. Mark is currently the National Academic Lead for the Australian Catholic University Allied Health Clinics. His previous positions include: Adjunct Associate Professor Griffith University Centre of Musculoskeletal Research; Executive Officer of Sports Medicine Australia's Queensland Branch; Executive Director of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (New South Wales Branch); Director of Physiotherapy Services for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games; Honorary Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Physiotherapy, Bond University.
