2024 Tasmanian Summer Breakfast - Launceston

Join us for the annual Tasmanian Summer Breakfast.

The Breakfast event offers an unmissable opportunity to engage with your peers and colleagues while enjoying breakfast.

Our keynote speaker this year, Ellen Lake, will be presenting ‘Staying at Work and Flourishing: Making friends with compassion fatigue, stress, imposter phenomenon and perfectionism'.

Burnout has been recently assessed as impacting 8% of physiotherapists globally, with a prior study identifying and describing psychological and emotional elements as avoidable risk factors. Whilst compassion fatigue and stress within the workplace have received most attention, emerging evidence is pointing to the impact of imposter phenomenon (IP) and tendencies of perfectionism, in contributing to physiotherapist self-perceived psychological distress.

This presentation will discuss the intersection of various emotional and psychological factors within the work-life of a physiotherapist and offer tips and opportunities for transforming distress into factors which promote growth and flourishing.

Please note: This is a face-to-face event. It will not be recorded or livestreamed.

With over 30 years of experience as a physiotherapist and a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association, I hold a First Class Honours degree from the University of Queensland and a Master's in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy from Flinders University. I am also a registered counsellor and psychotherapist with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).

Throughout my career, I have held several leadership roles, including Chair of the APA Qld Mental Health Group (2017-2021), National Chair of the APA National Mental Health Group (2021-2024), Vice-President of the International Organisation of Physical Therapy in Mental Health (IOPTMH) since 2021, and Chair of the APA Mental Health Scientific Conference Committee (2021-2023).

My written contributions include articles such as 'Is it time to integrate Self-Care into physiotherapy practice?' and 'Loneliness' for InMotion. I have also contributed to APA's '5 Facts Mental Health, PTSD' series, and content on 'Inflammatory Arthritis and Mental Health' for IOPTMH.

I was Co-Chair at the World Physiotherapy Congress in Dubai (June 2023) on the topic of 'Self-Care and Burnout,' and will chair the upcoming World Physiotherapy Congress in Tokyo (May 2025) focused on 'Mental Health and Physiotherapy.' Additionally, I have co-presented workshops at APA Ignite 2023, addressing 'Self-Care, Mental Health and Burnout' and 'Trauma-Informed Care,' and will present a webinar in July 2024 on 'Self-Care, Mental Health and Burnout.'
