The acute sporting knee

Presented by Specialist Sports Physiotherapist Jane Rooney, the course will cover contemporary evidence based assessment and management of commonly presenting acute knee conditions.

This one and a half day course is fully practical with interactive clinical problem solving. You will also provided with 4 hours of self-paced online learning, that is required to be completed prior to attending the course.

Day 1: 1.00pm - 5.00pm

Day 2: 8.00am - 5.00pm


The cases presented include assessment and management of:

  • ACL injuries
  • Patellofemoral joint injuries and pain
  • Meniscal and chondral injuries
  • Patella tendinopathy
  • Live patient assessment and treatment


Learning outcomes

  • Use advanced practical skills of assessment to differentially diagnose presenting sporting knee conditions including patella dislocation, ACL/ PCL / MCL / LCL ligament injuries , patellofemoral pain, meniscal / chondral pathology , patella tendinopathy
  • Apply advanced assessment of the lower limb kinetic chain and understand the contribution to commonly presenting sporting knee conditions as per element 1
  • Understand contemporary evidence of pathogenesis and world best practice management for commonly presenting sporting knee conditions as per learning outcome 1, including ACL injuries, patella instability and patellofemoral pain, meniscal and chondral injury and patella tendinopathy
  • Apply appropriate acute , mid and end stage rehabilitation techniques for different levels of athletes for commonly presenting sporting knee conditions as per learning outcome 1, including testing for safe and optimal success of return to sport
  • Explore specific rehab techniques from activation through to strengthening and power development for the quads , hamstrings , gluts and other lower limb kinetic chain / trunk muscles including neuromuscular rehabilitation and gym based rehab techniques, involved in commonly presenting knee conditions
  • To become proficient at the practical skills of management including taping, soft tissue techniques , joint mobilisations
  • To understand the long term outcomes for commonly presenting sporting knee conditions as per element 1
  • Explore advanced clinical reasoning using an actual patient example with a knee problem to discuss nociceptive driver and primary diagnosis , contributing factors , short and long management and prognosis

Jane Rooney


Jane Rooney, FACP is a Specialist Sports Physiotherapist – sub specialty knee (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2009) and Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (1997). Jane has extensive experience in the Sports Medicine field, both in Europe and Australia and is the Clinical Director of Prahran Sports Medicine Centre and Prahran Market Injury Rehab. She has a particular interest in ACL injury rehabilitation and prevention programs, patella instability, patellofemoral pain, in addition to knee osteoarthritis management programs. Jane was awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship in 2016 to investigate management algorithms and contemporary conservative management programs for anterior cruciate ligament injury, travelling to Europe, Scandinavia and America. Jane works closely with many of Melbourne's leading knee surgeons and sports physicians. Jane enjoys the challenge of working with athletes of all abilities including recreational , school, state, national and international competitors. Jane has a passion for education and is the sole director of Physio Educators which provides courses and online masterclasses in conjunction with the Australian Physiotherapy Association, in addition to a post at Melbourne University as an Honorary Lecturer, Guest Lecturer and post graduate mentor at La Trobe University and Swinburne University, an examiner and facilitator for the Australian College of Physiotherapists and a regular presenter for many APA courses.
