The art and science of lower limb rehabilitation

In this practical and interactive course, Michael will demonstrate functional assessment tasks and exercises that can be used to accurately identify and develop an appropriate intervention.

Accurate assessment and effective functional strengthening of the lower limb kinetic chain (LLKC) is vital in ensuring an adequate recovery from common hip, knee and ankle pathology. Exercises that can be taught and performed in the clinic and home with minimal equipment, enables all clients to achieve the desired result from their exercise program.

Exercise intervention needs to be able to isolate, adequately activate and strengthen the appropriate muscles to achieve the desired result for your client. A lunge or squat does not always achieve the activation you expect and your ineffectiveness will delay your clients' recovery.

Drawing from the latest evidence based research, participants will learn and experience how to activate the primary muscles required for lower limb pathology rehabilitation.

Utilising this knowledge, the group will also assess a patient in the session and develop an effective exercise intervention to address their dysfunction.

You can expect to learn how to adequately assess clients and identify pathology and dysfunctional movement patterns contributing to their presentation and intervene accordingly to address their deficits.

Learning outcomes

  • Be able to Identify specific local and global factors contributing to the lower limb pathology or dysfunction. Determine whether they are structural, pathoanatomical or neuromuscular control/ motor programming factors.
  • Be able to isolate particular structures demonstrating or contributing to the observed dysfunction/pathology.
  • Understand and implement interventions to address the pathoanatomical or motor control factors considered to be contributing to the observed dysfunction/pathology.
  • Be able to activate particular muscular deficits to address the motor control issues assessed as contributing to the dysfunction/pathology efficiently and effectively.
  • Understand how and why it is important to normalise and restore anatomical alignment patterns to facilitate a more normal motor program and effective muscle activation.
  • Be able to strengthen muscles identified as weak and develop appropriate exercise programs and parameters (repetitions and sets) to enable return to sport whether it be power/endurance.
  • Understand how to co-ordinate active components & facilitate neuromuscular control/ motor patterning.

Prerequisites

  • This course is only available to qualified and AHPRA registered physiotherapists.

Michael Vadiveloo FACP, is a Specialist Sports Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists 2009), and International speaker on the functional assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of the lower limb kinetic chain and more specifically the knee. He has lectured and presented workshops throughout Australia and Asia and this includes the Australian Physiotherapy conference, Sports Medicine Australia conference and the Beijing International Performance Summit. He also presents on the APA Level 2 sports course and to clinicians and post graduate physiotherapists at the local clinic level. Based in Melbourne he is the director of 2 private practices (City Baths Spinal & Sports Medicine Clinic and Energize Physiotherapy and Clinical Pilates Studio) and developer of the SMARTherapist app, an invaluable education and rehabilitation tool for fellow therapists and clients. He has a B.Sc degree in Human Movement Studies which has given him an invaluable knowledge base in biomechanical analysis and developing training and strengthening programs for clients and athletes. Utilising his extensive 30 year clinical and elite sporting experience (physiotherapist at St Kilda FC for 14 years), Michael continues to develop and present lectures and workshops that combine the practical application of current evidence-based techniques with his vast experience and observation of dysfunctional movement patterns and the appropriate interventions to address these issues.
